Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Studio at a virtual event held on September 22, a successor to the powerful Surface Book line of laptops. It is a total redesign, with Microsoft ditching the removable display in favour of one that pulls forward over the keyboard to transform the laptop into a tablet, or as Microsoft calls it “Studio Mode”
The 14.4-inch PixelSense Flow display on the Surface Laptop Studio supports up to 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision. Microsoft is using a new flexible Dynamic Woven Hinge, which the company says is durable and allows the laptop to change modes like the larger Surface Studio. The three modes are laptop, stage and studio.

The laptop mode is just like a regular laptop, with a full keyboard and touchpad. The stage mode is designed for the user to pull the display forward to an angle, covering the keyboard, for gaming, streaming or presenting. The studio mode is designed for sketching, writing and creating. The base of the laptop houses the Surface Slim Pen 2, which is sold separately.
The Surface Laptop Studio is powered by the Core i5 and Core i7 Intel 11th-Gen Quad-Core processors. The Core i5 models will ship with Intel Iris Xe graphics, while the Core i7 variants will include Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU with 4GB of RAM. There will be options to choose between 16GB and 32GB of RAM, and up to 2TB of removable SSD storage.
